Stained glass mosaic art formed on East Coast Shaped Warm Winds 6’4” surfboard. I made this piece with my favorite walk up to the beach in mind. Feeling that warm summer breeze and just knowing it was a perfect day, inviting pure happiness. The Japanese legend of the Amabie originated in the mid-1800s. This supernatural, incredible creature was witnessed glowing and emerging from the sea by a town official. He described it as mermaid or merman-like, covered in scales, with three legs, a mouth like a birds beak, and long flowing hair.
When the Amabie appeared, it delivered a prophesy of abundance or epidemic. The Amabie reassured the official,
“If disease spreads, show a picture of me to those who fall ill and they will be cured.”
This glass mosaic Amabie was made on Long Beach Island, NJ in March 2020 by SwellColors artisans Mary Tantillo and Ceire Parker, in response to the outbreak of COVID-19. It was borne as a symbol of healing and comes with a prediction of abundance and good times ahead. The piece measures approximately 31”x48” and is about 2” thick. Available for pick-up in the tri-state area. The Amabie is a 100% one of a kind, handmade artwork.
